South End Stringfest Brings Down the House

Updated: Mar 29, 2019

Over the past month, students from our Vivaldi Chamber Ensemble worked with the Soul Yatra Trio, featuring violinist Shaw Pong Liu, tabla player Sandeep Das, and cellist Mike Block, in preparation for the first-ever “South End Stringfest,” sponsored by The Celebrity Series of Boston. As part of this collaboration, JQOP musicians received two coachings with international-recognized cellist Mike Block, enjoyed a solo performance by Shaw Pong Liu on our monthly Coffee Hour Concert Series, and a special duo performance from Sandeep Das and Mike Block for the entire school.

Their work culminated in a final performance at More Than Words, in Boston's South End on Saturday, March 23rd. Joined by friends, family and area youth string players, our Vivaldi Ensemble performed the music of Sibelius and Grieg to kick off the event. The concert closed with a thrilling combined performance of the bluegrass music of Bill Monroe and the Eddie Harris classic funk tune, “Cold Duck Time.” Huge thanks goes to The Celebrity Series of Boston and their Neighborhood Arts program for created an unforgettable month of inspiring musical experiences for our students.
